Netflix to release 'Trese' anime

Things are bad out there, and sometimes it feels like the actual apocalypse could be knocking on our doorstep at any second.

If there's a Kaiju weather forecast being broadcast, then the panicky newsreader is probably telling you that there's an 80% chance of zero big budget Pacific Rim sequels on the horizon.

A series that will pop up on Netflix, as Deadline reports that the streaming platform is pushing forward with even more original anime productions.

"Asia is home to the world's great creative centers producing some of the most compelling films and series of today", said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix.

Two of the titles are original series based on existing properties that honestly seem like they should have been animes in the first place. As of now, it's unclear whether this anime is tied to that original planned series, or what del Toro's involvement will be on this project. The former comes from the minds of Craig Kyle (Thor: Ragnarok) and Greg Johnson (X-Men: Evolution), who will serve as co-showrunners, while the latter is a spin-off feature from Cowboy Bebop writer Dai Sato and Tsukasa Kondo. The cyberpunk setting and themes of lost identity are well-suited to anime - the medium helped define the former. They are forced to pilot an abandoned Jaeger across a hostile landscape in a desperate attempt to find their missing parents.

"Cagaster of an Insect Cage" is set in a post-apocalyptic world where the mysterious Cagaster disease turns people into giant murderous insects. Koichi Chigira (Last Exile, Full Metal Panic!) is directing the Gonzo (Hellsing, Afro Samurai) animation studio production. With LeSean Thomas ("The Boondocks", "Cannon Busters") set as creator, director and producer, the storyline features a retired ronin who must take up his sword when he is charged with the task of transporting a mysterious child who dark forces want to eliminate.

Trese: Based on the Philippine graphic novel of the same name, Trese is set in a Manila where "the mythical creatures of Philippine folklore live in hiding amongst humans". But of course, this set-up doesn't come without problems as she soon clashes with supernatural beings from the criminal underworld.
