Mr Barr has voiced disapproval over some aspects of the inquiry but his views on the investigation's legitimacy remain unknown. The Russia probe has long infuriated Trump, who calls it a "witch-hunt" and who has denied any collusion or any obstruction of justice.

"In my view, prosecutors who make political contributions are identifying fairly strongly with a political party", Barr said.
