Derek Fisher excited to be new coach of Sparks

Postado Dezembro 08, 2018

Derek Fisher's coaching career did not go particularly well, as the former New York Knicks coach registered a 40-96 record in a year-plus at the helm in Manhattan before getting fired.

Derek Fisher is taking his coaching talents to the WNBA.

Former NBA player and coach Derek Fisher has been hired to coach the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks.

Fisher played 13 seasons as the Los Angeles Lakers point guard over two stints from 1996 to 2012.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Fisher will officially be introduced at a press conference on Friday afternoon in Los Angeles.

Fisher is the 12th head coach in Sparks history, which includes Michael Cooper, another ex-Lakers championship role player.

Two years ago, Agler guided the team to the WNBA Championship in 2016. Brian Agler resigned as the team's head coach last week, leaving a vacancy that will be filled by the former National Basketball Association player and head coach.

"Derek is a champion and proven leader on and off the court", Sparks executive vice president and general manager Penny Toler said.

Some 35 months since coaching his last National Basketball Association game Fisher has resurfaced in Los Angeles now hoping to revitalize a coaching career that went from promising to punchline in a NY minute.
