People have been excited for Coming To America 2 since it was announced, but fans were tired whether Eddie Murphy would return for the leading role.
The original Coming to America starred Murphy as Akeem, an African prince who travels to America to find a wife who will love him for him, rather than his immeasurable wealth and royal status.
Brewer helmed both Hustle & Flow and the 2011 Footloose remake, but recently he's been directing a number of episodes of the TV series Empire. The film will be directed by Craig Brewer, who just finished working with Murphy on Netflix's Dolemite Is My Name, which is expected to arrive later this year.
The writers of the original film, Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield, have written a script for the sequel, and it's now undergoing rewrites by Kenya Barris of Black-ish.
Are you looking forward to the Coming to America sequel? Paramount is hoping the bulk of the original cast - which included Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, Shari Headley, and John Amos - will return for the sequel. "We've assembled a great team that will be led by Craig Brewer, who just did an incredible job on Dolemite [Is My Name], and I'm looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen".
"In the sequel, Akeem learns about a long lost son, and must return to America to meet his unlikely heir to the throne of Zamunda". The initial draft of the script came from original Coming to America writers Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield.
Said Kenya Barris: "Craig's ability to create a distinct cinematic world with each of his films is not only impressive, but also what made him exactly the voice and vision we needed to bring this story to life. He is a true auteur and we couldn't be more thrilled to have him on board". Let us know in the comments!
