According to the CDC, flu seasons vary from year to year.
In California, Fresno County has seen six flu-related deaths since October, the Fresno Bee reported on Friday, while a total of 42 lives have been lost throughout the state, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Ontario is probably just getting into the thick of things for the flu, said Dr. Michelle Murti, a public health physician at Public Health Ontario.
Officials from the New York State Health Department announced this week that the flu is spreading rapidly throughout the state, with some hospitals reportedly limiting visitation to prevent the spread of the virus.
Flu season is in full swing in the Hudson Valley, with dozens of reported cases now being treated by doctors in the area.
By comparison, there were 195 pediatric hospitalizations over the same period last season.
Pneumonia and influenza mortality was 6.4% for the week ending December 29, 2018, which was below the system-specific epidemic threshold.
"Calculations are based on adjusted rates of laboratory-confirmed, influenza-associated hospitalizations collected through a surveillance network that covers approximately 8.5 percent of the USA population, or about 27 million people", the CDC said. "Flu activity nationally is elevated", the CDC says in its latest report on flu.
Quick treatment can save lives, the CDC said.
Last season, an estimated 80,000 Americans died of flu and its complications - the disease's highest death toll in at least four decades.
"Most people who get sick with flu will have mild illness and will recover in less than two weeks without medical care".
The health agency also released new estimates of how the flu season is playing out. "Year in and year out, people who get a flu vaccine are better off than people who do not get vaccinated", the CDC said.
