New Mexico governor pulls troops from border, accuses Trump of fear-mongering

"New Mexico will not take part in the president's charade of border fear-mongering by misusing our diligent National Guard troops", Lujan Grisham said in a statement.

National Guard troops in Hidalgo County and surrounding southwestern New Mexico counties will remain to deal with the ongoing humanitarian need there as large groups of families have crossed over the border in Antelope Wells in recent months, she said.

As the governor correctly states, the southern border is not in the sort of crisis requiring the presence of National Guard troops.

Trump's promise to build a wall on the border, with construction paid for by Mexico, was a key message of his 2016 campaign.

Lujan Grisham is pressuring lawmakers to tap a multibillion-dollar state trust fund to provide greater access to early childhood education.

Democratic candidate for governor Michelle Lujan Grisham sits down for a meal at Barelas Coffee House on midterm elections day in Albuquerque, New Mexico, U.S., November 6, 2018.

"I recognize and appreciate the legitimate concerns of residents and officials in southwestern New Mexico, particularly Hidalgo County, who have asked for our assistance, as migrants and asylum-seekers continue to appear at their doorstep", she said.

Grisham's order not only covers troops from her own state, but any troops from National Guard companies in other states who were deployed to serve at the New Mexico border, including troops from "Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Wisconsin".

At the governor's instruction, six New Mexico State Police officers will also be temporarily dispatched to help local law enforcement officers in Hidalgo County. Grisham signed bills that span issues from teacher pensions to child foster care and public disclosures by lobbyists that had been vetoed by former Republican Gov. Susana Martinez.

Lujan Grisham has always been an outspoken critic of the Trump administration's immigration policies since her time serving in Congress and as chairwoman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

On Sunday, the Pentagon said it was sending an additional 3,750 troops to the border to help install wire barriers and monitor crossings.

Trump began ordering Marines and other active-duty personnel to the border last fall.

New Mexico's contingent of border troops is dwarfed by recent federal deployments of active duty troops.

"As for the 'state of our Southern border, ' mayors along the Southwest border consistently say that their communities are among the safest in the nation". We also need to respect the laws dealing with asylum-seekers, something the Trump administration does not do. There is no Central American invasion.
