Already a show with a strong lineup of female performers and nominees, the Grammys sprung another surprise by including former USA first lady Michelle Obama in an opening that also featured Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, actress Jada Pinkett Smith and host Alicia Keys talking about the power of music.

Keys mentioned Avant's honor before introducing Cardi B's performance. She was the most nominated woman at the Grammys, but twitter was still alight with people discovering the folk artist after watching her slay her performance during the show. "And I know that's true for everybody here", Obama said.

In her first time as host, Keys earned largely positive reviews from the internet reviewers of social media. As is the case with most awards shows, the Grammy Awards are mixing the envelopes opening with a ton of performances. Later on stage, she showed off her raw musical talents by playing two pianos at once, and covering songs from Nat King Cole to Kings of Leon.
Several in the audience were visibly moved and wowed by Brandi Carlile, who received a standing ovation before she completed her set.
