While the former FLOTUS scored a standing ovation as she helped open Sunday's show alongside Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jennifer Lopez and Alicia Keys, a text she's shared from her mom, Marian Robinson, undoubtedly put her ego in check.
She might have been First Lady of the United States for 8 years and have a best selling book, but to her mother, Michelle Obama just isn't a "real star".
The text chain starts with Marian writing, "I guess you were a hit at the Grammys", with a smiling emoji.
"Did you watch it?!" "Did you meet any of the real stars or did you run right after you were done".
"I know that's true for everybody here, whether we like country or rap or rock, music helps us share ourselves, our dignity, our sorrows, our hopes and joys". One can nearly imagine the playful smirk on Shields' face here; not only did Obama appear alongside little known stars like Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Alicia Keys, and Jada Pinkett Smith, but she received the loudest applause from the crowd.
Mother and daughter then quibbled over whether Obama had told her she would be on.
"Moms know how to keep you humble don't they lol", commented one user, while others suggested Michelle's mother may have been miffed that she wasn't taken for the show.
"I thought I told you", Michelle answered.
"It allows us to hear one another, to invite one another in".
