Icardi stripped of Inter Milan captaincy

Inter Milan take the captain's armband away from centre-forward Mauro Icardi, who continues to be linked with a move away from the club.

After being informed that he'd been stripped of the armband, Icardi decided that he did not want to travel to Austria for Inter's Europa League clash with Rapid Vienna on Thursday.

"Tomorrow we have a big game, there will be time to clarify things".

"The things going on around Icardi have disturbed us, both him and the team which he used to captain".

Despite netting nine goals in the first 13 Serie A matches of the season, Icardi is goalless in the last seven games, which is his longest drought since joining the club, and Inter fear that this contract stand-off is beginning to impact his performances on the pitch.

The Argentina worldwide has been a prolific goalscorer in an Inter shirt, with 119 goals in 210 appearances for Inter.

The Blues can trigger an option to buy the Juventus loanee for £31.3million at the end of the campaign but they will be tentative about a permanent deal given that he's 31.

Chelsea are one of a host of clubs linked with a transfer move for Icardi, who would fetch a monster fee for Inter as one of the best forwards in the world.

Icardi has spent a lot of time in the Spanish capital in recent times and was a guest at the Copa Libertadores final between River Plate and Boca Juniors at the Santiago Bernabeu in December.

Agent Wanda explained that her husband's priority was Inter, but insisted that there was "no rush" to sign.

"I would like Mauro to be more protected by the team".
