Mumbai bridge collapse: ‘Recent audit found Mum bridge sturdy’

Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Vinod Tawde said that the bridge wasn't 100 per cent hazardous and the municipal corporation had made some recommendations to fix the bridge.

Local BJP MLA Raj Purohit also visited the spot and demanded immediate action against the engineer who had declared the bridge as "safe".

The incident - the third footbridge collapse in the city in the last 18 months - occurred around 7.35 p.m.as the bridge was reportedly overloaded.

Rescuers ended their search operation at the collapsed bridge about two hours after it fell, Satpal said, adding that authorities were sure there was no one trapped because the rubble had been cleared away.

The part of the bridge at Cama Hospital end collapsed and at least 34 people were admitted to the hospital after the incident. Injured persons are being shifted to hospitals.

Six people died and over 36 people have been reported to be injured. "An NDRF team has been moved from Andheri center", NDRF said.
