But Sevilla have thrown a wrench into Arsenal's plans to appoint Monchi and have approached the Spaniard to return to the club in his previous role as sporting director.

Arsenal's hopes of appointing Monchi as their new technical director has hit a snag as Sevilla president Josa Castro confirmed they are in advanced talks with him.

Castro was quoted as saying by Spanish daily Marca: "Joaquin [Caparros] will not long be a football director in order to become a coach and Sevilla are working on bringing in a new sporting director".

"Sevilla now need a sports director and we have looked for the best", Castro told reporters. Our conversations go well with him.

Last week, AS Roma confirmed Monchi has left the club, and even before his exit from the Serie A side he has heavily linked with Arsenal. "The conversations have been very positive".

The 50-year-old built up a fine reputation at Sevilla with their extraordinary buy-and-sell policy, turning major profits on the likes of Dani Alves, Ivan Rakitic, Carlos Bacca and Seydou Keita. He also sold the former youth players Sergio Ramos, José Antonio Reyes and Jesús Navas for nearly €75m.

But despite being offered a three-year contract to replace head of recruitment Sven Mislintat at the Emirates, he is now in talks with Sevilla.
