The Americans are in Group E for the tournament that begins in China on August 31.

Senegal will enter with a world rank of 37 overall, but hold a regional rank of 2 in Africa. "We are a very young team".

Last October, Bryant was named a FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Global Ambassador. So Ersan Ilyasova, who plans to play for Turkey, knew long before the rest of the group was picked that his country will face a serious challenge.

Talented as the 1992 United States men's Olympic basketball team was, Johnson and Jordan stood out among the giants.

He was on hand in Shenzhen, China for the 2019 FIBA World Cup draw, which resulted in the USA landing in Group 3 with Czech Republic, Japan and Turkey.

Serbia - who will have Philadelphia 76ers' 7-foot-3 big man Boban Marjanovic - qualified to the World Cup after placing in third place in a tough Group L in the European Qualifiers.

The top two from each group will go into the second round in China. "But it's going to be fun".

Canada will cross over with the top two teams from Group G (Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Jordan) if they are able to advance to the 2nd round.

Spain won the World Cup in 2006, led by Pau Gasol - and he's hoping to play for his country this summer as well.

Host China is in Group A along with Ivory Coast, Poland and Venezuela while Russia, Argentina, South Korea and Nigeria compose Group B.

Group H looks particularly competitive, lining up Canada, Senegal, Lithuania and Australia.

For the first time, the FIBA Basketball World Cup will qualify seven teams directly for the following year's Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Bryant said he expects competition to be stiff, even for the Americans.

"At the start of the game you hear your national anthem being played, you see everyone in the arena with their flags, representing their country and colour".

Group H plays their preliminary round games in Dongguan, China. Second-round games will be played from Sept. 6-9, quarterfinal matchups are on Sept. 10-11, the semifinals are on Sept. 13 and the championship game is in Beijing on Sept. 15.
