Bill Nelson seeking to lock in low interest rates for student loans

Last week, the federal government increased rates for new loans from 3.76 percent to 4.45 percent. Interest rates on federal student loans for undergraduate students increased from 3.76 to 4.45 percent this past weekend. Nelson's office said that students who took out loans between July 1, 2006, and July 1, 2013, likely have a fixed rate of 6.8 percent and will have to keep that rate for as long as they're making payments, even though the rates have since fallen.
